BedHead Pajamas has caught my eye again with their 2009 Fall/Winter catalogue and the introduction of Boo Boo BedHead, a collection of mommy and me styles. As well, they have brought us the new BedHead Stretch, a cotton/lycra blend of the cutest prints and styles available for the kid at heart. As the weather gets colder and the nights get longer we all want something warm and comforting to wrap ourselves in. Might as well dress yourself in something that makes you smile, or possibly invoke a pillow fight. Check these out….

bedhead1

One of the best things about these pajamas is the variety of styles available for each print. We all have personal preferences and whether you are dressed for work or dressed for bed, what is truly important is that you feel confident in what you are wearing. The BedHead Stretch collection is both fun and comfortable no matter what style you prefer. The stretch blend is 95% cotton and 5% lycra, so you still get all the comfort of cotton with just enough stretchy lycra to compliment anyone’s figure just right.

There are plenty more new designs to choose from in the new catalogue. The men have some fresh prints to flaunt as well. Pictured below we have the classy Casablanca Men’s Pajama’s with robe, the Striped Cabana Pajamas, and the Cabana pants with a Henley long sleeve….I love a Henley long sleeve on a man!

bedhead2

Let us not forget that BedHead Pajamas is much more than just pajamas. They have such a beautiful selection of luxurious bedding and many other little goodies for your home. Be sure to check out the news digs for your holiday gifts.

To celebrate the new catalogue our friends at BedHead have been so gracious as to offer our supportive shoppers a special discount code which will be available to you through December 25th. When you’ve finished your shopping at bedheadpjs.com be sure to type NONPROFIT in the discount code box to receive an extra 15% off your entire purchase.

I would also like to take this opportunity to mention a charity that is very special to BedHead. BedHead has teamed up with Esperanza Community Housing Corporation in an effort to better our community and provide fair housing and affordable wages for everyone. BedHead currently has three pajama styles up on the website that, when purchased, 20% of the purchase price is donated to Esperanza. In addition, their Pink Ribbon PJ donates 15% of its purchase price to The National Breast Cancer Foundation. Can you even handle any more good news? Just think of all the good you can do simply by doing your holiday shopping at Bed Head Pajamas THROUGH Non Profit Shopping Mall. With so many charitable options available in one single purchase it’s quite possibly the most important gift you can purchase.

Now….go forth and shop happy!

With a little help from our Spanx!

spanx

Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive… except when it comes to a great undergarment from Spanx. And with the holidays just ahead, a little deception from this excellent performance wear line can help hide a multitude of sweet and tasty sins. As a woman, I’ve learned that no matter what shape or size you are, we women all need a good support system. So like a gift from the Gods above, Spanx gives us exactly that. We all want to look great in our clothes. Some people prefer the helping hand of a bra with back support, while those of us who are less top heavy, so to speak, prefer the security of a gentle hug around our caboose. With Spanx you can find the support and discretion you need to proudly strut your stuff from head to toe. They cater to every shape from petite to curvaceous, including those lucky ladies with legs that seem to go on for days or the mommy to be who refuses to give up on her fierce style simply because there’s a bun in the oven. Pictured below is a sampling of the sleek solutions to keeping things under control. Spanx has a surprisingly large line of undergarments to choose from –and nonprofitshoppingmall.com proudly works with 5 major retailers who carry the Spanx brand online, for maximum convenience.

spanx2

The second best thing about Spanx is how comfortable they are. Unlike traditional girdle-like garments, Spanx products are soft and breathable – with no embarrassing tight bands that roll down at the belly when you sit or bend either!

spanx3

Spanx has such a great line of tights and pantyhose. There are cute designs like the hounds-tooth tights pictured above, and they even carry fishnets. The tights pictured above center are fantastic. They are reversible. One day you can wear brown and another day you can turn them inside out and wear blue. How cool is that? Most importantly, woman who are pregnant want to feel sexy and they deserve it. Spanx has some great pantyhose that give you sexy legs and full tummy support.

spanx4

As a big fan of strapless dresses and capri pants, these three shape-wear undergarments are my favorite.

Where can I buy Spanx?

spanx5

AND WHO DO WE THANK FOR SPANX?
In 1998, Spanx creator Sara Blakely found herself in a fashion dilemma. What she wanted to wear one day was her favorite pair of cream colored pants with some open-toe shoes. Sara was not a fan of the thong, nor did she want a visible panty line. So, she did what any fashion driven woman would do. She grabbed a pair of pantyhose and cut off the toes. Voila — she now had footless pantyhose and did not have to compromise her open-toe shoe. That, my friends, was the birth of Spanx. Sara Blakely now offers women, all over the world, freedom from visible panty lines, clingy fabrics, and tummy bulges. Thank you Sara!!

GAVI Alliance

During this month of December when our thoughts often turn to helping those less fortunate than ourselves, we'd like to introduce GAVI ALLIANCE and its simple, yet powerful mission to IMMUNIZE EVERY CHILD. Vaccines are truly life giving gifts, and perhaps the worlds best hope for slashing the still scandalously high rates of infant mortality in the poorest communities of the world.

Founded by Nelson Mandela, Bill Gates, and other world leaders in 2000, GAVI unites all of the major stakeholders in this cause for immunization: developing country and donor governments, vaccine manufacturers worldwide, the World Health Organization, the UN Children's Fund, the World Bank, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and other private philanthropists.

Vaccine-preventable diseases: such as pneumonia, rotavirus and cervical cancer, impose two enormous burdens on the world, one direct, and one indirect. The direct burden is the more obvious: it is the suffering and death of millions of children and adults who are not protected from easily prevented diseases. Every year, 9.7 million children die before their fifth birthday, and a quarter of these deaths are due to diseases that are preventable through vaccination. The problem with such statistics is that they are difficult to grasp. This is a real issue - the human mind is not very good at appreciating the scale of such large numbers. In absolute terms, the death toll is equal to half the total number of US children under five currently alive. Put another way, you could fill every professional football stadium in the United States five times over with the number of children who will die this year.

The very scale of those numbers and the visualization of that many people suffering and dying is justification enough to tackle this crisis. And yet, it is the indirect burden of vaccine-preventable diseases that presents an even more compelling motivation. Through careful and systematic research, the impact of disease on growth and overall economic welfare is now well understood.

Immunization is a cornerstone of public health programs and serves as a platform for other interventions. These programs have been sustained for decades, even through war and conflict. In one of the greatest successes in public health history, smallpox was eradicated by immunization campaigns in 1979, and polio eradication is now within reach. Each year approximately 25 million infants do not receive the necessary immunizations, and at least 2.4 million children die from vaccine-preventable diseases -- approximately 14 percent of deaths in children under 5. Millions more survive, but are left severely impaired. The long-term effects of these childhood illnesses limit the ability of those who survive to become educated, to work, or to care for themselves or others.

The world needs changing - and is changing, with the help of the GAVI ALLIANCE and its partnerships, more than 213 million children have been vaccinated against diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, yellow fever, hepatitis B, and Hib (Haemophilus influenza type b) and has prevented more than three million deaths in the process. GAVI has improved health services in 72 nations - home to half the world's population and, to date, GAVI has marshaled $4 billion for vaccination through 2015. During this holiday season - why not give the gift of life to a child by insuring their ability to be immunized against childhood diseases - give to GAVI directly or support their cause by shopping through their mall and SAVE A LIFE.

Boarding For Breast Cancer

The month of October brings with it a number of images - for me it's the deep reds and vibrant colors of a changing season -- but standing out amongst the hues of autumn is the iconic pink ribbon that symbolizes hope, strength, unity and commitment for all those involved in the fight against breast cancer. With October designated "Breast Cancer Awareness Month," it's fitting that we feature an organization dedicated to imagining a world without breast cancer... Please welcome Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC), a youth-focused education, awareness, and fundraising foundation, whose mission is to increase awareness about breast cancer, the importance of early detection and the value of an active lifestyle. So much of the media's attention has been geared toward women in their 40's and over, that the gap in information has almost given young women in their 20's a false sense of security when it comes to breast cancer. The sad truth is that young women get breast cancer all too often as B4BC's founders know all too well.

The inspiration for Boarding For Breast Cancer was a young woman named Monica Steward. Monica, who was a very dear friend of all B4BC founders, started her battle with breast cancer at the age of 26 and passed two years later from complications that arose from the disease.

Boarding For Breast Cancer was founded as a result of Monica voicing her frustration about the lack of awareness among young women about the disease to friends and future co-founders, Tina Basich, Shannon Dunn, Lisa Hudson and Kathleen Gasperini. Their idea was to create an event that centered around their mutual passions, snowboarding and music, to communicate the message of awareness while raising money for research and educating young women about breast cancer.

Monica Steward passed away a month later, just three months before her inaugural Boarding For Breast Cancer Snowboard + Music Festival event.

Fortunately B4BC has continued to hold events and spread their message of "early detection plus an active lifestyle equals best prevention." To see if there's a B4BC event in your area check their upcoming events here.

CORE BELIEFS AND VALUES

  • B4BC BELIEVES in the well being of the snow, surf and skate community, and that their role is to teach positive health practices which assist in detection and prevention of breast cancer.
  • B4BC VALUES the volunteers, families and survivors who support our organization.
  • B4BC BELIEVES early detection of breast cancer is an essential element in winning the fight against cancer.
  • B4BC VALUES the unique cultural link of board sports: the artists, athletes and participants in these sports.
  • B4BC BELIEVES their organization helps people create a positive sense of self-worth and supports people in a time of need.
  • B4BC VALUES teamwork, volunteerism, collaboration and grassroots efforts.
  • B4BC BELIEVES every breast cancer story is unique and it is their role to honor the diversity of people affected by breast cancer.

WHAT THEY DO

  • B4BC TEACHS awareness and provides information to empower people who are managing the effects of breast cancer in their lives.
  • B4BC INSPIRES - strongly believing that breast cancer is not a death sentence and that battling the disease can provide optimism and hope.
  • B4BC ADVOCATES for those affected by breast cancer by providing a place to tell their stories and to speak the truth of their feelings about breast cancer.
  • B4BC SERVES the action sports community, a passionate group of people who share a love for an active lifestyle through snowboarding, skateboarding and surfing.

While B4BC is our default charity for the month of October - you can continue to support their cause by going to their own private label mall where, if you download their EZ Shopper Widget, you can purchase all your action sports wear, travel, birthday and holiday gifts for years to come...

College Productivity Tools

For Just about every student out there the 2009-2010 school year has already begun but it’s never to late for school shopping, particularly for those attending college. Tuitions and supplies such as textbooks become more costly with each passing year so I’d like to help by sharing my findings in ways to stretch your education dollar this fall.
There are a handful of online retailers out there that are dedicated to supporting scholars worldwide and, in the process, are doing their part to ensure some social and global responsibility one step at a time. Collectively their mission is essentially the same: to help make the life of the eager, knowledge thirsty consumer easier while giving back to our communities for today’s generation and those to follow.

rosetta

Their mission is simple — expanding communication and understanding on a global scale. Though they realize there are many organizations offering beneficial services to the community, RosettaStone chooses to focus their support on organizations and events that incorporate one of three basic principles: language learning, diversity and culture, education and literacy. RosettaStone, in so many words, is a well-rounded company with simple and moral social responsibility standards. Whether you’re learning a new language as part of your studies or just looking to expand your cultural palette, you’ll surely find what you need at RosettaStone. With a proven track record at being the easiest and most successful way to learn a new language, you really can’t go wrong. They have products for the home, schools, business and home schooling. Choose from over 30 languages and maybe reward yourself with a trip to that country to test out your new skills on the locals.

textbooks

Online retailer’s textbooks.com boasts the largest selection of used textbooks on the planet and that’s saying a lot. With up to 90% off of over 9 million textbooks it’s hard to find a better place to buy the essentials. Textbooks.com also carries the largest selection of eTextbooks . What are eTextbooks? They are digital, downloadable versions of print textbooks, so you can access the same information as regular textbooks anywhere and anytime with out the hassle of carrying the weight of the real ones on your back. They sell new and used books on just about every subject out there and everything in between. When you are done with your books just sell them back to the company. As a thank you for recycling your books textbooks.com will automatically give you an extra 10% back! How great is that?

The largely popular Apple MacBook is not only the perfect laptop computer for students, but it’s “greener” than most other electronics out there. Apple’s company as a whole has taken a stand to create products that help reduce our carbon footprint so we can continue to use the tools we rely on the most without further contributing to the demise of the home we all love and cherish. Since October of 2008 Apple has been providing costumers with estimates of greenhouse gas emissions generated by each new product sold. For example, the manufacturing and use of the fabulously popular MacBook results in 460 kg C02e emissions over four years. Based on EPA findings, that’s about the same amount the average car emits in just one month! That’s pretty impressive. It’s good to know that Apple cares, especially considering how many products they create that we as students and people of the work force rely on daily.

To tie this all together we must consider the fees incurred in order to be a student. Finding a loan that’s right for you as an individual can be down right nauseating some times. With so many predatory lenders out there the last thing you need is for all of your hard work and dedication as a student to seem fruitless when you proudly accept your degree. SimpleTuition.com recognizes the importance of focusing on education rather than dwelling on debt. By using their system they can help you find a loan that is catered specifically to your needs, goals, and financial capabilities. Here is what some people have had to say about their experience with SimpleTuition.com…

BedHead Pajamas Cozy Fall Collection

bedhead
It’s bittersweet when the hot days of summer begin waning into the breezy and chill nights of autumn. Personally I’m a summer fanatic but I can’t deny the overwhelming joy of being able to slip back into a cozy set of pajamas. In fact, as I scan my dresser drawers I realize I might just have more pajamas than regular clothes. After all, some nights I feel the need to call upon the old faithful flannels and other nights it’s the magic of the sexy satins – one must be prepared. Whatever your preference may be, we all could use a great set of pj’s to make us feel cozy and warm. At Bed Head Pajamas there is something for everyone, not to mention some of the cutest pj’s for children that I have ever seen. For men, they have styles that are casual, classy and sexy all rolled into one. Take a look.

From BedHead’s women’s collection, these two pajama sets are my absolute favorites. I could easily wear the flannel cheetah print jammies around the house all day long. The only excuse I need is a rainy day, a good movie and a cup of delicious coffee. The other set is a sateen kimono style pajama. The colors and design are beautiful and the style is very sexy. Give me a great book and a chaise lounge so I can feel completely spoiled in style.

bedhead_one

Now, at some point in life all of us ladies must endure what I call “the rite of wisdom”. Others might just call it hot, wet misery, but with these amazing pajamas below it doesn’t matter how you look at it, there is relief. Bed Head has blessed us with a variety of pajamas made of Cotton Voile. What is Cotton Voile? It is a plain weave, gauze-like, free flowing material. Garments made of this magical fabric are perfect for summer and brief waves of heat that come and go as they please whether we want them to or not. The sheer quality of Voile allows for maximum airflow while still providing superb coverage. And, it should come as no surprise to you that these pajamas are both adorable and chic.

bedhead_two

I find something terribly attractive about a man in pajamas, particularly in plaid prints. And, who can deny the simple allure of the basic white tee and shorts?

bedhead_three

Here we have the children’s pajamas. Having a child of my own I have to admit I melt at the sight of my daughter in her jammies. I get tickled over wispy-eyed babies in cozy little footsie sleepers and cotton thermal sets. With BedHead Pajamas new children’s line, they have definitely found my tickle spot.

bedhead_four

Last but surely not least, BedHead also offers other goods such as bedding and accessories. The bedding is very elegant and comes in most of the same prints as the pj’s. The fabrics, of course, are a gift to the touch. And it doesn’t just stop there, BedHead has all the things we love like a warm pair of slippers, a luxurious robe or a cute little make-up case.

Target Hits Bull’s-Eye for Back to School

targetlogo

I can’t believe it’s nearing the end of August already. As all the school employees are preparing our schools for the year ahead, those of us with kids are gearing up to shop for their back to school goods. Let us be grateful for the plethora of online discounts. As an avid online shopper myself, I’ve discovered that there are almost always deeper discounts on the web than in store. Of course, there are shipping fees. However, once you’ve factored in driving from store to store, filling up on gas, dragging the kids around and having to transform from mom to lioness just to survive the crowds of bargain thirsty consumers, you realize S&H fees aren’t so bad. What if you could escape the stress of the back to school shopping frenzy by purchasing absolutely everything you needed online at one single store while saving tons of money, giving back to our local communities, as well as your favorite nonprofit? Well, I decided to put one of my favorite stores to the test, because nothing excites me more than convenience mixed with huge savings. I went to Target.com and there was nothing I wasn’t able to find through their search function. Understand me here – I found everything I was looking for! Here are some basic back-to-school styles for kids that are super-cute as well as functional.

target_one

Also, as more and more public schools are switching over to the uniform only program, the styles for school uniforms are becoming more fashionable. It’s not just polo shirts and pleated skirts these days. I found some snappy looks for boys and girls who have the desire to stand out from the masses. It’s just darling to see our kids wearing swanky threads. I love the look of the button up oxford with a tie, and teacher will be thrilled to have such a dapper little student.

target_two

For the girls I found plenty of skirts and pants. What caught my eye was this navy button up dress with just a hint of late 1940’s casual style. Also, these khaki Bermuda’s with a white button up blouse are particularly cute.

target_three

To round out the back to school shopping experience, I also found some very cool backpacks. As a child of the 80’s, I remember the trendy designs of the Jansport backpack. It looks like the Jansport people are still just as much stuck in the 80’s as I am. The black and white checkered backpack featured below is reminiscent of my childhood skater days. For girls I found this adorable messenger bag. It’s just the right size for textbooks and has plenty of pockets, including three pockets for pens or pencils. As for lunchboxes Target.com has all the usual stuff but this Retro Tin Lunchbox is not only awesome as is, but your kids can get their creative with it too. The lunchbox comes with art supplies to design your own signature day glow art-box!! Like it or not day glow will always be cool.

target_four
Prices for all of these items range from $9.99-$29.99 – Target.com really is on-target when it comes to back to school!

Peter's Story - St. Bernard Project

Volunteering in New Orleans' St. Bernard Parish was an amazing, eye-opening experience for me. Before Katrina hit, it was a thriving middle-class community of more than 68,00 people, many of them fishermen, oil workers, natural gas workers, and construction workers. A tightly knit community of normal, hardworking people, St. Bernard Parish was home to generations of families. Neighbors all knew each other well, families lived within minutes of each other; it was a true community.

Since the hurricane, less than a third of the people have returned. The ones that have, found their neighborhoods destroyed, their friends scattered, their families moved to other towns and other states. While there, I rarely saw a street that wasn't missing a few houses or that had several others under-going reconstruction and still others slated for demolition.

I was honored to meet and work with the Perez family. The dad is disabled and couldn't do the backbreaking work himself. He and his wife have two teenagers. We were one of the first teams in their home since the storms, so we did lots of demolition and mold treatment. It was dirty, filthy, hot work. AND at the same time, so much fun! Go figure. I'd hire someone to do it at my own house, but I loved doing it for someone else who truly needed the help.

I stayed at a place called Camp Hope. It was such an incredible place -- all staffed by volunteers and housing up to 1,200 volunteer workers at any one given time. It used to be a middle school, but when I was there, the classrooms were all being used as dorms, sleeping 20 to a room on bunk bed cots made by volunteer carpenters. We took cold showers and ate in chow lines. It was one of the best weeks ever! Very much like summer camp for grownups. I miss it so much already. I understand that it's closed now, which is really sad on one level, but really cool on another because it means that the school is re-opening.

I feel lucky to have worked with the St. Bernard Project. My experience was beyond explanation and words can't really do it justice. I think The Perez home was roughly house number 154 for the people at the St. Bernard Project. With little money and all volunteers, they make a difference every day. They are my new heroes. It was fun, hard, moving, gross and I'd do it again in a minute. In fact, I'm hoping to make it back early next year. Want to join me?

Peter Barton --
